Screen Time is built into every iPhone and iPad. Follow these steps to put healthy limits on the apps that steal your crafting time.
Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad. Scroll down and tap Screen Time. It has a purple hourglass icon.
Tip: You can also search for "Screen Time" in Settings.
If Screen Time is not already active, tap Turn On Screen Time and then tap Continue.
Choose "This is My iPhone"(or "This is My Child's iPhone" if you're setting it up for someone else).
If it's already enabled you'll see your usage dashboard — skip to the next step.
Tap App Limits > Add Limit.
Select categories or specific apps to limit:
Set a daily time limit. We suggest 30 minutes per day — generous enough to check in, tight enough to leave time for crochet.
Tap Add to confirm.
Go back to Screen Time and tap Downtime.
Toggle it on and set a schedule. We recommend 8:00 PM — 8:00 AM so your evenings and mornings stay distraction-free.
During Downtime, only apps in your "Always Allowed" list and phone calls will work. Everything else shows a time limit screen.
You can customise Downtime per day of the week if your schedule varies.
Go to Screen Time > Always Allowed.
Make sure SammySam (or Safari / your browser of choice) is in the allowed list. This ensures you can always access your crochet patterns — even during Downtime.
If you added SammySam to your Home Screen as a web app, look for its icon in the list.
Go to Screen Time > Lock Screen Time Settings(or "Use Screen Time Passcode").
Create a 4-digit passcode. This prevents you from easily bypassing your limits in a moment of weakness.
Pro tip: Ask a friend or family member to set the passcode for you — maximum accountability!
Auto-open SammySam when you try to open a limited app. This uses the built-in Shortcuts app — no extra downloads needed.
Find the Shortcutsapp on your Home Screen (it has a colourful overlapping-squares icon). If you can't find it, search for "Shortcuts" in Spotlight.
Tap the Automation tab at the bottom of the screen.
Tap the + button in the top-right corner, then choose Create Personal Automation.
If you already have automations, you may need to scroll to see the + button.
Scroll down the trigger list and tap App.
In the next screen, tap Choose and select the apps you want to redirect — for example:
You can select multiple apps at once.
Make sure Is Openedis selected (not "Is Closed"). This fires the automation every time you open one of those apps.
Tap Next.
Tap Add Action, then search for Open URL (under the Web category).
In the URL field, enter your SammySam kit URL, for example:
Replace "momo-frog" with the slug of whichever kit you're currently working on. You can find the URL in your Wallet.
Tap Next to review the automation. Toggle off Ask Before Running so the redirect happens silently and instantly.
Tap Done.
Now whenever you open one of the selected apps, iOS will automatically redirect you to SammySam. Time to crochet instead of scroll!
Create a dedicated "Crochet Time" Focus Mode to silence distractions during your crafting sessions.
Go to Settings > Focus > tap the + button.
Choose Custom. Name it "Crochet Time" and pick a colour and icon (we like the yarn ball or sparkle icon).
Under Allowed Notifications, tap People and choose only the contacts you want to hear from during crochet time (or select none).
Under Apps, add only SammySam (and perhaps Music or Podcasts if you like to listen while crafting).
Tap Add Schedule and set the times you normally crochet — for example, every evening from 7:00 PM — 10:00 PM, or on weekend afternoons.
You can add multiple schedules for different days.
Long-press your Lock Screen > tap Focus > link Crochet Time to a specific Lock Screen wallpaper.
Now you can swipe to that Lock Screen whenever you sit down to crochet, and the Focus Mode activates automatically.
You can also add the Focus toggle to Control Centre for one-tap activation.
